Nothing is more frustrating being on vacation and suddenly coming down with an illness. If you want to prevent illness when traveling, it is important to take some health and safety precautions before you board the plane. Below are a number of important items you should carry in hand luggage when you board a plane that will help keep you healthy:

1. If you are taking medication, it is important to take enough of a supply that will last until you return home. Sometimes certain medications may not be available in a particular destination. As well, you should also bring a legible repeat prescription in case you lose your medication. As well, if you take medication for a specific condition such as diabetes, you should put your supplies in your carry bag and wear a medical bracelet. If you have a serious pre-existing medical condition, you should have a doctor’s note along with a prescription. If you take a contraceptive pill, you should also keep it in your carry on bag.

2. If you wear contact lenses or eyeglasses, you should include your spares along with your prescription in your carry on bag. When it comes to any contact solutions, you should check with the airline to see if you can bring it on the plane

3. Most experts recommend packing a small medical kit and keeping it in the carry on bag. Items that should be included in the bag include: antiseptic for cuts and scrapes, aspirin, antihistamines, band aids, cold and flu medication, throat lozenges, rehydration solution, antibiotic ointment, anti diarrhea medication, Chap Stick, thermometer, and sun block. There are ready-made made kits available at pharmacies. It is important to check with the airline to make sure that items in the kit can be taken on the plane during the flight.

4. Hand sanitizer is an important item to help prevent picking up germs and viruses. You just have to take 100ml (3oz) or less for the plane. As well, applying a bit of antibiotic ointment or a nasal gel on the inside of your nose will help prevent inhaling airborne germs Antibacterial wipes are handy for cleaning such areas as the tray top, the arm rest, toilet seat, and the door handle in the toilet.

5. Useful items to keep you healthy and comfortable during the flight include: inflatable neck pillow, bottle of water, small water spray bottle to mist and rehydrate your face, fizzing Vitamin C tablet that you can add to your water during the flight, and a packet of nutritious berries or nuts.

If you want to make your flight experience healthier, consider flying on less busy days if possible. With less people on the plane, there is less chance of catching a cold or flew. Also, during the flight, make sure the air vent is not aimed directly on your face to prevent germs from blowing on your face.

To make the most of your travel experience, it is important to take precautions to stay healthy. By taking the key health and safety items that will help you stay healthy while on your flight, it will significantly reduce the chances of picking up an illness.

Twitter has become a world wide phenomenon now used by millions of people. Twitter is a free online social networking tool that allows users to post short 140-character updates to the Web for their ‘followers’ to read. As well, the site also allows users to ‘follow’ other people. This popular micro-blogging site has become a handy tool for world travelers. If you are planning on using Twitter while traveling, below are a number of useful tips to make the Twitter experience more worthwhile:

1. Before you book your vacation, follow some travel experts and travel groups from the area where you will be traveling. They will usually tweet areas of interest, information about events and attractions in the area, and special discounts being offered. You can also ask them questions. As well, following travel agencies and airlines will allow you to take advantage of late breaking deals and participate in promotion deals. It is essential to follow tweeters that best suit your travel plans. For instance, JetBlue has almost 500,000 followers to date and they often send out their latest deals information. You can ensure that you don’t miss out on special deals by setting up Twitter feeds. This can be done by clicking on ‘RSS feed updates’ on the profile page of the Tweeter you want to follow.

2. Twitter is a great way to find discounts on local hotels, restaurants, and other events and attractions. Consider following local establishments, hotels, and resorts, tourist bureaus, and more in the vacation destination for updates about latest deals and bargains. More businesses are now using Twitter to advertise their deals and promotions.

3. A helpful tool for Twitter users is an application known as TweetDeck. This application acts much like a personal browser which will display messages from preferred tweeters that is located in easy to navigate columns that organize the content according to the user’s personal preferences.

4. Twitter search is a helpful tool that has an easy to use search box that displays related results from the site. For instance, when using this tool to monitor your flight, you can arrange for all related real-time tweets posted on the site that can include the airline, airport, or other travelers.

5. There are travelers that are using people on Twitter to help them plan their vacation instead of using a travel guide book. For instance, as they travel, they will pose such questions as where is a good place to stay. Where is a good place to eat? Where is a good place to have a cup of coffee? Where is the best beach? Twitter can be very helpful if you are looking for recommendations.

Twitter is a social networking site that is fast becoming an indispensable tool for travelers as well as the travel industry. Because tweeting is limited to just 140 characters, the information sent out is just the facts with no fluff. Twitter is now also the fastest way to communicate with other travelers and travel industry. If you have not jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, it may be time to join and start enjoying the travel tweets.

Air Ambulances: How Do I Ensure That I Select The Most Suitable Service For A Family Member?

March 7, 2010 by

Air ambulances are aircrafts that may be utilized to arrive at a medical emergency situation where other more regular land-bound ambulances are not able to. An air ambulance is also typically used when imperative transfer to another hospital or health specialist is required. Calamities can take place anytime, anywhere. There are situations when the topography is too unmanageable or too unrealistic to travel by roads. An air ambulance allows medical care to make it to the people in need quickly and efficiently.

But, not all air ambulances are the same. There are myriad points to look for when picking a medevac company. For instance, consider the security of the plane. All airplanes are required by the FAA to go through minimum check-ups. Try to find an air ambulance service that goes the extra mile, with a well-known standing for keeping their planes in tip-top running condition.

In addition, find out if the service is equipped to cope with medical emergencies while in transit. Medical emergencies can’t be planned for, so find an air ambulance service that is equipped to deal with all possible situations. Choose air ambulances that are outfitted like Intensive Care Units at traditional hospitals. This greatly lessens the liability of being unfit to handle an emergency in the air, and should give you some peace of mind.

While the equipment on board is important to the safety and health of a patient in transport, the flight staff and medical crew are just as important. Select an air ambulance service that provides its medical crew special instruction as in-flight medical experts. Not all nurses are made to be flight paramedics. Having specialized training on flight physiology will make a world of difference to the competence of the medical crew to tend to a patient while in transport.

Another factor to consider is how fast an air ambulance service can be provided. Medical crises are simply that: crises. The medical assistance needed is urgent. It doesn’t matter how speedy an air ambulance is if it requires a whole just to deploy it. Look for an air ambulance that offers immediate deployment. You should be opting for a service that deploys within two hours of receiving authorization.

Of course, price is certainly something to consider when choosing air ambulances. While one can’t put a price on guaranteeing the medical needs of the patient are attended to, an effort should still be made to select an air ambulance service that provides you the best worth for your money. Ask for a quote and ask for a guarantee that the cost you are quoted is the price you will pay when everything is said and done.

When employing the appropriate service, an air evac can prove to be very helpful in providing immediate medical help to a loved one in need. Keep the elements mentioned above in mind when selecting air ambulances so that you may get an ideal flight experience.

Tips On Staying Healthy While Traveling

Because of the increased news coverage about viruses such as the H1N1 virus, more people are realizing that they have to take health precautions when traveling. It seems as though everywhere we go there is a risk of picking up some ‘bug’ that can make us sick, with some ‘bugs’ that can make us gravely ill. Fortunately, there are a number of easy to implement measures one can take to stay healthy while traveling.

1. To avoid such illnesses as travelers’ diarrhea, food poisoning, and illnesses caused from contaminated water, one should take a number of precautions such as only drinking bottled water. Make sure you eat food that is well cooked and has been thoroughly washed and peeled. Be wary of unsanitary restaurants. Look for well known restaurants in traveler guide books. Only eat freshly prepared foods and avoid raw vegetables and fruits. You should also stay away from raw seafood. As well, you should not drink beverages that contain ice cubes. It is important to eat healthy and stay hydrated. A package of berries or nuts is healthier than eating sugary and fatty snacks.

2. Keep such health items as hand sanitizer, antibiotic ointment, and Kleenex on hand. Use hand sanitizers frequently and do not touch your mouth, nose, or eyes. Rubbing a bit of antibiotic ointment in your nasal passages will stop airborne germs from entering the body. As well, anti bacterial wipes are handy disinfectants. You can use them to wipe down doorknobs, toilet seats, and anything else that can contain germs

3. You should travel with a medical kit. This can include band aids, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, Tylenol, medicine for diarrhea and an upset stomach, and Vitamin C. A week or two before your trip, you should boost your immune system by exercising, eating healthy and taking vitamin C.

4. When you are traveling by plane, and are concerned about catching a virus, you can wear a surgical mask. You can also carry a small water bottle to spray your face to stay rehydrated during the flight. You should also make sure to wipe down seats, arm rests, and head rests with a disinfectant wipe. Avoid using airline blankets and pillows as they can carry germs. When using flight bathrooms, use tissues to turn doorknobs and faucets as well as flushing toilets to avoid E.coli infection.

5. When using the air vent, direct air flow to your chest so air is not blowing into your face. Try not to sit next to someone who has a cold. Keep all of your belongings in your carry on bag and store it in the overhead unit. As well, try to fly on days when there are less passengers flying. On long trips, make sure you get up every hour and stretch your legs to prevent blood clots.

Just because there a number of illnesses out there, it does not mean you have to stop traveling. By taking the proper health precautions, you can drastically improve your chances of having a great vacation with becoming afflicted with an illness.

Flying With Your Dog in a Private Plane

December 6, 2009 by

There is no doubt that most of us love our pets and are up for taking them with us everywhere we can. Its amazing to note that most dogs love going for a trip in the car. Mind you its not clear if it’s the car they love so much or just being with their owner.

All those Private Pilot dog lovers would be more than happy to take their canine friends with them on a flight. In fact some of them do. After the first few times you can pretty well determine how the dog is going to react to flying, but it can be a little unpredictable the first few times. Its not like being in a car where you can just pull over because the dog is nervous. Perhaps a wise idea would be to give the dog some preliminary training.

The first thing you want to ensure is that the dog will remain independent even if she/he is a little apprehensive. You don’t want your dog to be jumping around the plane and into your lap when you are trying to fly your plane. Its very important that you have a well trained obedient dog that is going to listen to your commands. Especially the command to sit. That way you will be more assured that you can talk the dog through its nervousness. If you dog has been in the habit of roaming around your car and sitting in your lap when driving then you will need to break him of this habit before you attempt flying with him.

If you dog is crate trained then this is perfect for you. The first few times you fly simply take the dog and crate for a flight. You will get a chance to see how the dog is going to react. You can also do this a few times to see if the dog will get over his fear safely for both of you. If your dog is not crate trained then do not attempt to adjust the dog to the crate and flying all at once. You will not be able to determine which is upsetting the dog. In addition, it is too stressful on the dog.

Noise control is going to be another issue you are going to have to consider. You know yourself what the engine noise does to your ears. A dogs hearing is much more sensitive than ours is. You will need to protect the dog by finding some protective hearing. Once again, do not introduce these to the dog a few minutes before your flight. Dogs don’t like surprises especially when it comes to their ears. Practice putting the ear protectors on your dog a little each day and for longer periods until he becomes comfortable with them.

Collars and harnesses can be a good safety feature as well. You can use these to keep your dog in his seat without the restraints of a crate. Once again, be sure your dog doesn’t mind being confined before flying. You don?t want to be dealing with dog problems when your flying requires all of your attention.

You know your dog better than anybody does. Assess the dog fairly and determine honestly if you think the dog would enjoy flying with you. Don?t put your dog through a nerve-wracking ordeal if he is the nervous type just because you want him with you.

Find Out About Pilot License Pre Solo Flight Requirements

November 28, 2009 by

If you have begun your research into becoming a licensed private pilot then you have discovered that there are two major training segments that you must complete. First the pre solo segment then the post solo segment.

Of course, it stands to reason that there are many things you must learn and become proficient in before you attempt your first solo. After all, once you reach this stage there is no room for error. Safety no matter what segment of training you are at must be the priority.

Qualified flight instructors are very adept at judging whether an individual is ready to move onto solo. If they are not at that stage yet but have completed the pre solo segment then that particular student can be moved onto the post solo requirements. Although this is nothing something many schools will do, it is a very feasible possibility. The solo hours can be concluded after this part. Quite often, the biggest stumbling block to not flying solo is the insecurities experiences with the landings. In cases such as this, extra flights are a good solution. This is where an added expense may occur if you did not count on extra flights.

So you are faced with the two segments as we mentioned which is the aeronautical knowledge and then once that has been successfully completed you move on to aeronautical experience. It makes common sense that a thorough knowledge of flying requirements be well absorbed before a would be pilot takes to the air.

It does not matter how much an individual loves to fly when they become the one behind the controls there is bound to be a certain amount of insecurity seep in to begin with. It is up to the instructors to know exactly what level of knowledge and confidence their students are at. The Pilot in training logbook becomes the most important record of knowledge and experience when it comes to their completion of qualifications and training. Everything they learn and do must be recorded here. Every requirement of training must be noted and signed by the training instructor. Without the logbook, being properly completed there is no point in even attempting to qualify for your license. There is no overlooking any of the requirements. The examiners are strict and rigid on their demands.

Do not try to cut yourself short on your studies for pre solo requirements. If you take this segment of your course lightly then there is a good chance you are not going to progress past this point. That means you will never acquire your private pilots license and you have wasted your money. Flying is a very serious responsibility and priviledge. Therefore, all aspects of training including both theory and practical must be approached in that manner. It is natural to want to get up in that plane totally on your own as quickly as possible. It can only be done with safety being the priority. It is worth taking the time to complete your studies as efficiently as possible.
