Travel Insurance Coverage: Things To Be Aware Of

You may have heard there’s a major increase in travel insurance sales because of all the terrorism scares, environmental disasters occurring, and outbreaks of disease. But there is a caveat. Generally this type of insurance coverage will not protect you if you cancel a vacation out of outright fear.
It isn’t likely you’ll get coverage for situations involving subway bombings or plots involving liquid explosives. Should you plan to vacation near the shore and think about canceling your plans due to a typhoon that may or may not hit your vacation location the chances are it will not be reimbursed by the policy. Situations like these aren’t included in a travel insurance policy.
Travel insurance claims that you can receive payment for those “un-reimbursable” portions of your trip. For example, a typical qualified expenditure would be plane fare. To be covered, the expense typically would be related to the cancellation of a planned excursion, or to defray meal expenses in the event that you are stuck in a strange city through no fault of your own.
Medical services are also covered by insurance should you become ill overseas and need medical evaluations. This becomes critical because there is no guarantee that your medical insurance provider is recognized in other countries. However, most policies are loaded with loopholes related to what is not covered.
A lot of the things that cause people to purchase travel insurance aren’t even included. For example, some insurance policies do not cover any sort of terrorism. This forces travelers to have to carefully read their policies to find out which types of coverage are available.
Additionally, policies including terrorism reimbursement cover you only if you have to cancel your trip, AND only if the city you were scheduled to visit within 30 days of your leaving has experienced an attack. If you are afraid to visit a country because of a recent terrorist outbreak in a neighboring area, most likely you are out of luck. The concepts of fear or trepidation are not provided for in an insurance policy.
But fear is the catalyst behind the recent surge in the purchase of travel insurance. And the point is that fear is one of the things that most insurance policies don’t cover. These policies will also require you purchase the specific insurance coverage you want (i.e. terrorism) within 15 days of booking your trip, or you will not be covered.
Many insurers did pay out for costs of meals and hotel rooms for insured travelers who were stranded in London during 2006, after the failed plot to blow up planes with liquid explosives occurred. On the other hand, because in this instance, there was no actual attack, policies did not pay if someone wanted to cancel their plans.
The cost of protection for traveling is just like every other insurance policy because it depends on where the person is going, how thorough they want their coverage to be and other risk factors. The wise shopper can find travel insurance that will provide protection for many things including medical coverage and medical transportation, or even for delayed flight and lost bags. You may prefer to shop for a policy that covers only your concerns, they are available.
There are some insurers who have begun to offer a ‘cancel for any reason’ policy. These policies are not fully refundable but will pay up to 74 percent of costs. Because this policy offers more leniency, it costs much more than regular travel insurance.
170000 travellers protection insurance policies are bought by consumers yearly in the US. Purchases of travel insurance increased by 100% since the bombings of the World Trade Center in New York in 9-1-2001. This rise is expected to continue, due to the recent outbreaks of disease and various environmental disasters that are impacting the travel industry.
You should also remember that in serious catastrophes that affect a lot of people, travel agencies will generally waive restrictions and fees on re-booking. Sometimes you don’t need the insurance to catch a break.
