The mainstay of the family holidays is always been a beach resort. Many beach resorts are encircled by stunning landscape and national parks, providing plethora of opportunities for hale and hearty activities like nature safaris, horse riding, canoeing, skiing, cycling and hiking. Package holidays are easy on the pocket ways to take family on holidays. Standard hotel repast keep the expenditure of family holidays under control and children generally like the option of buffet-style eating.

The upsurge of low-cost airlines has unfastened a remarkable choice of family holiday destinations. Family holidays to less known destinations like Turkey or Egypt or Sri Lanka offer great value for money. Gradually, families are picking and deciding on exotic far-flung destinations.

People of all budgets ranging from 7 star to 1 star like to stay on the interesting sandy beaches be it Mauritius, Bahamas or white sands of Maldives lure all age groups because of their safe blue waters with sufficient water sport facilities, marine life excursions, boat expeditions etc. these beaches are also bordered by attractive country side. Nonetheless, it is unworkable for everyone to enjoy these striking spots in their restricted resources.

Families want to take pleasure in the flavour of all these luxury facilities within their finances which differs from individual to individual. For that matter, places like Sri Lanka which can be a great substitute to Maldives can be visited by limited finances families. In terms of overall cost, a week’s stay in Sri Lanka is approximately equal to a one day stay in Mauritius.

Unlike Mauritius, Sri Lanka is a value for money holiday destination offering wonders which include white sandy beaches, serenity, great hill stations with flourishing greenery, thrilling adventures in the mountains and off the riversides, astonishing wildlife and a rich legacy. The warm and friendly smiles of the people look forward to welcome all its tourists to their beautiful land.

Colombo is the capital city with a number of spots of visitor interest, some of the must visit ones being: 1. Dehiwala Zoo 2. Dutch Period Museum 3. Fort Clock Tower 4. Gangaramaya Temple 5. Independence Hall 6. Mt Lavinia Beach

The mixture of sun and sand with the perfect atmosphere offers unforgettable moments for a family away from disharmony of city life. Some striking beaches of Sri Lanka include:

1. Negombo 2. Mount Lavinia 3. Kalutara 4. Beruwela 5. Bentota 6. Hikkaduwa 7. Galle 8. Arugam Bay

Coming towards the countryside from Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, the most famous hill station, some 6000 feet above sea level fosters stunning scenery. During the travel between Colombo to Nuwara Eliya comes Kitulgala where the film ‘A Bridge over the River Kwai’ was filmed. Going forward from Nuwara Eliya to Haputale arrive the Horton Plains Nation Park (7200 ft). This is the islands highest & most isolated plain also known as the ‘The end of the World’ as here the cliff plunges almost vertically for 700m.

Other than this, there are rich legacy sites where the ‘Temple of Tooth’ in Kandy is a pleasure to see. An eight days stay in a 3 Star Hotel including breakfast (apart from airfare and food)for a family of four which consist of two elders and two children just rate US$ 800- US$ 850 where several companies advertise exceedingly economical internet booking packages for Sri Lanka.
